Five years ago, when I visited Surajkund mela I was just an enthusiastic shopper with no knowledge of art, craft or culture but I was smitten. Spread across 40 acres, it is a riot of colours and cultures; be it weavers of Banaras or performers from Kenya, Surajkund has it all.
What is Surajkund Mela?
Surajkund International Crafts Mela is an annual fair setup in the Surajkund district of Faridabad, Haryana. It is the largest crafts fair in the world with over 1010 huts for weavers and artisans. The festival is organised and curated by Surajkund Mela Authority and Haryana tourism with a vision to promote the pool of skilled artisans, who use indigenous technology, but are suffering due to the cheaper machine-made imitations. It unfolds a wonderful range of textiles, paintings, wood stock, ivory work, pottery, terracotta, stonework, lac querware, cane and grass products.
